How every recipe is laid out

  1. How much it makes and how long it takes, right under the name.
  2. A line of where it comes from: Mother's kitchen, Glen's plate, or the neighbor over the fence.
  3. Mother's Way: how she said it ("butter the size of an egg") and what it measures.
  4. What you'll need, in cups and spoons, cut down for one or two.
  5. What to do, step by step, with the oven temperature and the minutes.
  6. Keeping: how long the second plate lasts in the refrigerator and the freezer, and how to warm it.

Cooking for one, the whole way through

Hazel's red notebook open beside her mother's tin measuring cup

Why I wrote these down

My mother cooked for six of us on a wheat and chicken farm in Marion County, Kansas, and she never wrote down a recipe in her life. When I asked her how much, she'd say "enough," and go on stirring.

The last winter she was with us, I stood beside her at the range with a measuring cup and made her drop every handful in my cup first. Her handful of flour was a scant half cup. Her pinch of salt was half a teaspoon. I wrote every one of them in a red notebook.

After my husband passed, I found out I didn't know how to cook for one. I never really learned; most weeks I still cook for four and freeze three. But one of Mother's little tin bread pans taught me the small suppers for the nights in between, and I wrote those down in the same notebook. This book is that notebook, typed up so it outlasts the paper.

Questions people ask

Is this a printed book?

No. It is a download: two PDFs and an e-book. You can read it on a screen or print it yourself. Nothing is shipped.

Is it really for one person?

Nearly every recipe makes one or two servings, and every recipe says how much it makes. Where one makes more, like a pot of beans or a batch of cookies, it tells you how to freeze the rest.

Do I need special pans?

No. A 9 x 5 loaf pan, a skillet, a small saucepan and a baking sheet. A small slow cooker if you have one. I'd ask you to buy one thing: a kitchen thermometer, so you know your meat is done.

How big is the large print?

About the size of the print in a large-print library book. If you'd rather have more on each page, the regular edition comes with it at no extra cost.

Are the measurements American?

Yes. Cups, spoons, ounces and degrees Fahrenheit, the way they're written on a Kansas recipe card.

Is it a diet book?

No. It's farm cooking, cut down to size. If your doctor has you on a special diet, follow your doctor.

How do I pay, and is it safe?

With a credit or debit card. Payment is handled by Gumroad, a company that sells books and patterns for thousands of small makers. I never see your card number.

What if I can't open it or can't print it?

Reply to the email your book came in and you will get help. If it still doesn't work for you, you get your money back.
