Ten chapters, sorted the way you cook: by the pan you have and the time you've got.
Popcorn and milk on Sunday night, bierocks, rivels, wilted lettuce, milk gravy and the rest of what Mother made from almost nothing.
Oatmeal with raisins, buttermilk pancakes, sausage gravy, ham and egg cups, all for one.
One 9 x 5 pan, one supper tonight and one tomorrow. Glen's meatloaf, Thanksgiving for one, the dollar supper.
Hamburger gravy, chicken-fried steak, salmon patties, fried green tomatoes, in one skillet.
Ham and bean, Monday pinto beans, Mennonite cabbage borscht, all in a 2-quart pot.
Kansas beef and noodles, pulled pork, Daddy's apple butter, made for a 2-quart slow cooker.
Meat and vegetables on one small baking sheet, with nothing to wash but a fork.
Cream biscuits, peanut butter cookies, franks and beans: three things from the store or fewer.
Mother's buttermilk biscuits, little skillet cornbread, a bride's loaf and cinnamon rolls.
Snow-shoveling oatmeal cookies, apple crisp for two, pumpkin custard, molasses crinkles.

These are pages from the regular edition, shown small. The large-print edition has the same pages in bigger letters.
My mother cooked for six of us on a wheat and chicken farm in Marion County, Kansas, and she never wrote down a recipe in her life. When I asked her how much, she'd say "enough," and go on stirring.
The last winter she was with us, I stood beside her at the range with a measuring cup and made her drop every handful in my cup first. Her handful of flour was a scant half cup. Her pinch of salt was half a teaspoon. I wrote every one of them in a red notebook.
After my husband passed, I found out I didn't know how to cook for one. I never really learned; most weeks I still cook for four and freeze three. But one of Mother's little tin bread pans taught me the small suppers for the nights in between, and I wrote those down in the same notebook. This book is that notebook, typed up so it outlasts the paper.

No. It is a download: two PDFs and an e-book. You can read it on a screen or print it yourself. Nothing is shipped.
Nearly every recipe makes one or two servings, and every recipe says how much it makes. Where one makes more, like a pot of beans or a batch of cookies, it tells you how to freeze the rest.
No. A 9 x 5 loaf pan, a skillet, a small saucepan and a baking sheet. A small slow cooker if you have one. I'd ask you to buy one thing: a kitchen thermometer, so you know your meat is done.
About the size of the print in a large-print library book. If you'd rather have more on each page, the regular edition comes with it at no extra cost.
Yes. Cups, spoons, ounces and degrees Fahrenheit, the way they're written on a Kansas recipe card.
No. It's farm cooking, cut down to size. If your doctor has you on a special diet, follow your doctor.
